Food addiction involves being addicted to food in the same way as someone with a drug use disorder who is addicted to a certain substance.
People with food addiction report that they cannot control the consumption of certain foods. Some foods are more likely to cause symptoms of addiction than others.
Researchers at the University of Michigan studied food addiction in 518 people. They use the Yale Food Addiction Scale (YFAS) as a gauge. This tool is most commonly used to assess food addiction.
All participants received a list of 35 foods, both processed and not. They assessed how likely they were to experience problems with each of the 31 foods, on a scale of 1 or not addicted to 7 or very addicted.
In this study, 7-10 percent of participants were diagnosed with fully developed food addiction. In addition, 92 percent of participants exhibited addictive eating behavior. They repeatedly have the desire to stop eating it, but are unable to do that.
